Treaty of London


Date of Issue: March 6, 1967

On May 11, 1867, the major European powers signed the Treaty of London which provided for the evacuation from the fortress of Luxembourg of the Prussian Army which had occupied it since 1815. The Treaty also called for the orderly dismantling of the fortress and declared that Luxembourg would thereafter be unarmed and neutral and that this neutrality would be guaranteed by the signators.

Lions Clubs International

50th Anniversary

Lions Clubs International, founded in Chicago in 1917, is the world's largest service organization and has about 40,000 clubs in 165 countries. The clubs are associations of business people who champion worthwhile local community social service projects. There are 15 regional Lions Clubs in Luxembourg (District 113).

NATO Council Meeting

The NATO Council Meeting was held in Luxembourg on June 13-14, 1967.

Luxembourg Youth Hostels

Date of Issue: September 14, 1967

This stamp promotes the many youth hostels located in Luxembourg. Shown on the stamp is the one at Ettelbrück; the stamp design was based on the work of the winner of a children's design competition.

International Association of Home Gardeners

16th Congress

Date of Issue: September 14, 1967

The 16th Congress of the International Association of Home Gardeners was held in Luxembourg on September 15-17, 1967. This organization, headquartered in Luxembourg, was founded in 1927 and has as members local gardening organizations in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Luxembourg Faience Industry

200th Anniversary

Date of Issue: September 14, 1967

It was in 1767 that the Boch brothers of Audun-le-Tiche established in Luxembourg a pottery factory called "Manufacture impériale et royale de faïence et de terre de pipe" (Imperial and Royal Faience and Earthenware Works). Two masterpieces from the early 19th century are shown on these stamps.

Moselle River

Date of Issue: September 14, 1967

These two tourism stamps show scenes along the Moselle River. The first stamp shows a view of the town of Wormeldange and Le Vignoble tower. The second shows the port of Mertert, inaugurated on September 1, 1966 after the canalisation of the Moselle.

These stamps depict the five children of Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte: Guillaume (1963), Margaretha (1957), Jean (1957), Henri (1955), and Marie-Astrid (1954). The 13F + 6.90F stamp shows Berg Castle, the Royal residence.

The 20th annual Luxembourg Fair was held in Luxembourg City on May 23-June 2, 1968.

Mersch Children's Village

Date of Issue: September 18, 1968

The goal of the SOS Children's Village organization is the education of orphaned and homeless children in a family-like atmosphere. Children can be admitted to the village up to the age of 10 and can stay until they're able to take care of themselves.

Blood Donors

This stamp publicizes the continuing need for voluntary blood donations in the Grand Duchy.

Luxair is the Luxembourg national airline and was founded in 1962. The main shareholders are the Luxembourg Government, Banque Générale du Luxembourg, Banque Internationale à Luxembourg, Banque et Caisse d'Épargne de l'État, Radio-Télévision Luxembourg (RTL), and Lufthansa.

Handicapped Children

Date of Issue: December 5, 1968

These stamps bring attention to the needs of handicapped children in Luxembourg. The lowest value shows the H.M.C. Institute in Capellen for the treatment and care of physically and mentally handicapped children. The other stamps depict a deaf-mute child, a blind child, a physically handicapped child, a cerebrally handicapped child, and a mentally handicapped child.

JUVENTUS 1969 Philatelic Exposition

The 1st International Youth Philatelic Exposition, JUVENTUS 1969, was held in Luxembourg on April 3-8, 1969.

Joseph Kutter (1894-1941)

Date of Issue: May 19, 1969

Kutter is considered to be Luxembourg's most famous artist. His portrait of old Luxembourg City on the 6F stamp was commissioned for the Luxembourg national pavilion at the 1937 Paris International Fair.

International Labor Organization

50th Anniversary

Date of Issue: May 19, 1969

The International Labor Organization (ILO) was founded on June 28, 1919 for the purpose of improving the working and living conditions of workers worldwide. It recommends global standards for wages, hours of work, and other work-related issues. The ILO received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969.


25th Anniversary

Date of Issue: September 8, 1969

This stamp commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Benelux customs union.


20th Anniversary

Date of Issue: September 8, 1969

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed on April 4, 1949 as a peacetime military alliance to address military expansion and subversive activities of the Soviet Union and its allies. The founding members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, and West Germany.

This stamp promotes the importance of agriculture in Luxembourg. The Mersch Agrocenter is pictured on the stamp.

Tourist Destinations

Echternach and Wiltz

Date of Issue: September 8, 1969

The stamp for Echternach shows the St. Willibrord Basilica and the ancient Benedictine Abbey. The one for Wiltz shows the Wiltz Castle and the adjacent open-air theater.

Castles I (Charity Issue)

Date of Issue: December 8, 1969

These stamps show how several medieval castles of Luxembourg may have looked in their heydays, as interpreted by Luxembourg artist Foni Tissen. Some of these castles have now completely disappeared and others are in various states of ruin. The following castles are shown:
